NEW YORK CONCEPT PREVIEWS NEW ‘FACE’ OF LEXUS

•	World debut for LF-Gh hybrid concept at New York International Auto Show
•	Concept car offers cues for future Lexus design direction, including new ‘spindle’ front grille
•	Unveils new ideas to be carried forward to future Lexus production

The Lexus LF-Gh (Lexus Future Grand Touring Hybrid) Concept will make its global debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show.

“For this concept, Lexus designers studied characteristics that are often considered contradictory,” said Kengo Matsumoto, general manager, Lexus Design Division.

“The design examines the possibility of balancing what are normally opposing qualities, such as style and functionality.”

The front end incorporates a spindle-shaped grille which projects a bold new look – a key feature that will be inherited by future Lexus models.

Benefits of the new grille design include more efficient aerodynamics and radiator and brake duct operation.

The concept has been conceived as a redefinition of the luxury grand tourer, with a ‘clean sheet of paper’ approach to design.

The design process has brought about a refinement and evolution of Lexus’ L-finesse design philosophy – established in 2001 – with a more distinctive projection of what a premium segment model could become.

“Customers have been waiting for a bold concept like this from Lexus,” said Mark Templin, Lexus Division (US) group vice president and general manager.

“We look forward to their feedback and integrating some of these exciting design features into future Lexus vehicles.”

The LF-Gh sees Lexus take the idea of the grand tourer – carrying passengers in comfort over long distances – a step further.

It combines enhanced creature comforts with a load space big enough to carry luggage for an extended trip.

Built on an agile, rear-wheel drive platform, LF-Gh offers generous interior space for four occupants within a distinctive, long greenhouse design.

The design is about both form and function, as demonstrated in the way air enters through the front inlets next to the vertically arranged LED fog lamps and exits through similar slim outlets at the rear, following the curve of the tail lamps.

The concept also explores how the impact of traditional features such as door mirrors and handles can be minimised to enhance overall sleekness and improve aerodynamics.

Twin-spoke 20-inch wheels further add to the sense of driving appeal.

Wraparound LED tail lamps with intricate reflectors are set behind all-red lenses.

The LED headlamps and independent L-shaped LED daytime running lights ensure the LF-Gh has a ‘face’ like no other car on the road.

Inside, a high-visibility instrument panel and centre console, plus new analogue clock with a three-dimensional face, serve as a focal point for the cabin.

“Although only a concept, we hope the LF-Gh will resonate with our customers worldwide, and communicate our intention to once again advance ideas about the face of Lexus luxury in the years to come,” Mr Matsumoto said.

Jaguar XJ is the Top Gear Luxury Car of the Year 2010

Top Gear has named the Jaguar XJ as its Luxury Car of the Year 2010, placing the British firm’s flagship model above rivals from BMW and Audi.

Writing in the most recent Awards Issue of Top Gear Magazine, Editor at Large Jason Barlow described the XJ as a “Blast from the future,” adding “rarely has a new car slackened so many jaws.”

The XJ is a landmark vehicle from a revitalised and more confident Jaguar. Since launch in May 2010, it has been extremely well received by customers and media alike and is fast becoming a multi-awarding winning model, having already scooped the Scottish Luxury Car of the Year and What Car? Luxury Green Car of the Year accolades.

“The Jaguar XJ brought a bold new approach to the luxury car market in the UK with its distinctive design, generous accommodation, exceptional performance and strong economy credentials,” said Geoff Cousins, Managing Director, Jaguar UK.

“We’re delighted that the Top Gear team – definitely one of the toughest judging panels anywhere in the motoring world – have recognised what makes the XJ so special with this award.”

With its lightweight aluminum architecture, the XJ is the most efficient luxury car in its class. It has attained a 29 percent segment share during its first six months on sale, establishing itself as the British car of choice with customers ranging from company CEOs to high-end hotel chains.

Priced from £53,900 on the road, the Jaguar XJ is on-sale now at Jaguar dealerships throughout the UK.

The Audi Q3 – a premium SUV in compact form

The new Audi Q3 is a premium SUV in a compact form. This genuine Audi sets standards in all aspects of engineering – from its body through drivetrains and chassis to its state-of-the-art assistance systems and multimedia systems. The Audi Q3 is a versatile companion for everyday life – with an urbane character.

The design of the Q3 is classic Audi: its coupe-like styling is one-of-a-kind among SUVs and symbolizes its sporty identity. Distinctive lights add a striking touch and the very flat-set rear window emphasize the sporty nature of the Audi Q3.

Thanks to systematic lightweight design, the basic version of the Audi Q3 weighs less than 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lb). Its engine hood and wraparound tailgate, which houses the taillights, are made of aluminum; the safe and solid passenger compartment features a great many ultra-high-strength steels. Its low drag coefficient of just 0.32 also enhances fuel efficiency considerably.

The interior of Audi’s latest model is very roomy; its ergonomics and its workmanship are exemplary. Just as for the exterior, customers have many opportunities to express their very own style in the interior: Audi offers a wide selection of materials and colors. The luggage compartment offers 460 to 1,365 liters (16.24 to 48.2 cu ft) of capacity – ideal for sports and leisure.

Customers can opt to supplement the standard specification with numerous options straight from the luxury class. Examples include adaptive light technology for the xenon plus headlights, which ideally illuminates the road ahead – even around corners. And an enhanced parking assistant alerts the driver to obstacles, even if they are off to the side.

Furthermore, Audi offers an entire set of infotainment components, spearheaded by the large MMI navigation plus – a hard drive navigation system – and the Bose surround sound system, with handsomely illuminated woofers up front. In the near future, an online Bluetooth car phone will follow, paired with a WLAN hotspot to provide the Q3 with full Internet connectivity.

This compact premium SUV by Audi will roll off the assembly line with three different four-cylinder engines: one TDI and two TFSI units. All three will combine direct injection with turbocharging, and will feature not only an energy recovery system but also a start-stop system. With power outputs ranging from 103 kW (140 hp) to 155 kW (211 hp), these engines will be as efficient as they are powerful. The basic version, the Q3 2.0 TDI, is scheduled to appear a little later and – with 103 kW (140 hp) and front-wheel drive – will average less than 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (45.23 US mpg).

The most powerful gasoline engine and diesel engine, respectively, will be paired with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic, which switches gears at lightning speed. And the S tronic features an innovation: during coasting, the dual-clutch transmission disengages the clutch and allows the Q3 to roll freely – provided that the driver has selected efficiency mode in the optional Audi drive select system. This measure also boosts fuel efficiency.

Drivers can use the four modes of Audi drive select to have various systems adjust to their individual driving style; these include engine management and the optional adaptive dampers. The chassis of the Q3 – featuring a four-link rear suspension, electromechanical power steering, and robust wheel brakes – is the fruit of great design labor. The hold assist function is an available option; down the road, the hill hold assist system will be made available.

The Audi Q3 will go on sale in June. Its basic price in Germany will be 29,900 euros.

Premium SUV in a compact form
The Audi Q3
Audi is venturing into a new market segment: The Audi Q3 is a premium SUV in a compact form. It is sporty and efficient as well as versatile and trendy – a vehicle which feels right at home on or off any road. The Q3 showcases Audi’s expertise in all aspects of engineering: from its lightweight body through strong and efficient drivetrains and a dynamic chassis to its state-of-the-art assistance systems and multimedia systems. Many of its features are straight from the luxury class.

Design and body
The Audi Q3 features the sportiest and most progressive design in its segment. The single-frame grille with its tapered upper corners dominates the front; its outline is extended by the dynamic curve of the engine hood. The wedge-shaped headlights are available as a xenon plus version including LED daytime running lights. Large air inlets hint at the potential of the engines.

Viewed from the side, the Q3 similarly exhibits Audi’s classic design characteristics. The tornado line divides the side underneath the windows. The dynamic line imparts additional flourishes near the side sills and the wheel arches have a muscular look. Metal constitutes two thirds of the vehicle’s exterior; the greenhouse the remaining third. The roof line slopes markedly toward the ground; the D-posts resemble those of a coupe.

Despite its coupe-like styling, the Audi Q3 is clearly recognizable as a member of the Q family. Its wraparound tailgate is similar in design to those on its larger siblings, the Q5 and Q7. In conjunction with the xenon plus headlights, LED light strips serve as tail lights. The exhaust system’s tailpipes terminate to the left and to the right. The Audi Q3 is 4.39 meters in length (14.4 ft), 1.83 meters in width (6.0 ft), and 1.60 meters (5.25 ft) in height – roof rail included. Its drag coefficient of 0.32 raises the bar in this segment; moreover, its underbody fairing facilitates optimum airflow – underneath the vehicle, too.

Audi offers twelve different colors of paint for its new compact SUV, and five customization options are available regarding add-on parts. In addition to the standard black add-on parts, customers can choose either a full paint finish or color-contrasting add-on parts in anthracite gray for the underbody guard and wheel arches. The Audi exclusive off-road styling package gives the Q3 a broad and powerful look. The S line exterior package, conversely, represents classic Audi and appeals to especially sporty customers.

This compact SUV’s body is very rigid and impact-resistant yet quiet on the road. The passenger cell incorporates a great many tailored blanks as well as extremely strong hot-formed steel. These components are quite thin, which reduces the vehicle’s weight. The tailgate and the engine hood of the Audi Q3 are made of aluminum. The front-wheel drive version of Audi’s latest model weighs less than 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lb).

Interior
The roomy interior of the Audi Q3 harmoniously mirrors the exterior design’s sinewy yet gentle styling. A large curve, known as a wrap-around, encapsulates the driver and the front-seat passenger – a feature familiar from the brand’s large model lines. The dashboard’s horizontal layout underscores its width. An optional color display (as large as seven inches diagonally) on the instrument panel is a first in the Q series.

Workmanship of uncompromising quality is every bit a matter of pride at Audi as is stylistic confidence in the selection of colors and materials. Five color concepts are available for the interior: black, gray, beige, and two shades of brown. With regard to upholstery, there are three fabric designs and three leather designs. For the inlays, there are four optional versions – including open-pored larch inlays and new silvery aluminum inlays with supplementary wire mesh and a 3D look. The S line sports package offers an additional inlay and bathes the entire interior in a cool black color.

Operating the Audi Q3 entails straightforward logic and intuitive user-friendliness – typical Audi. It is simple to read the instruments at a glance; the seats provide outstanding support and comfort. The chorus sound system with an AUX-IN input is standard, as are an air conditioner and an extensive array of occupant restraint systems.

Numerous high-end options attest to the excellent technological standards of the Q3. They include an on-board computer with efficiency program, an ambient lighting package with a great many LEDs, a panoramic glass roof, a storage package, sports seats, electrically adjustable and heated seats, a convenience key for entering the vehicle and starting the engine at the touch of a button, two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, tinted rear windows, and a three-spoke leather steering wheel in a new Q-specific look. Adaptive light technology for the xenon plus headlights and the high-beam assistant intelligently illuminate the dark road ahead.

The Audi Q3 has a luggage compartment that offers plenty of room for recreational and sports equipment. Its 460-liter (16.24 cu ft) capacity swells to a volume of 1,365 liters (48.2 cu ft) with the split rear seat backrests folded down. A roof rail is standard. A wealth of options make driving this compact SUV even better. Among them: a luggage compartment package, a front-passenger seat with a folding seat back, a reversible loadliner, a reversible mat, a loading-sill protector made of stainless steel, a load-through hatch in the rear seat backrest, and a ski bag. The Audi Q3 can tow a trailer weighing as much as 2.0 metric tons (4,400 lb).

Drivetrain
The Audi Q3 will be available with one of four engines. Upon its market launch, two gasoline engines and one TDI engine will be offered; a second TDI engine will appear a little later. All four of the four-cylinder engines will have a displacement of 2.0 liters. They all deliver great output and terrific torque from 280 to 380 Nm (206.52 to 280.27 lb-ft). In addition, all engines combine Audi’s mighty efficiency technologies: direct fuel injection, turbocharging, the start-stop system, and the energy recovery system.

The 2.0 TFSI delivers either 125 kW (170 hp) or 155 kW (211 hp). The more powerful version propels the Q3 from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.9 seconds and on up to a top speed of 230 km/h (142.92 mph). The 2.0 TDI is available with 130 kW (177 hp); a version with 103 kW (140 hp) is to come a little later. Paired with front-wheel drive, the version offering 103 kW (140 hp) averages less than 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (45.23 US mpg).

Both TFSI engines and the stronger of the TDI units will be supplied with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Its key element is a hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which redistributes power at lightning speed from the front axle to the rear axle as needed.

The Q3 2.0 TDI with 103 kW (140 hp) will roll off the assembly line with front-wheel drive and – just like the Q3 2.0 TFSI quattro with 125 kW (170 hp) – with a six-speed manual transmission. The 130 kW (177 hp) TDI engine and the 155 kW (211 hp) TFSI combine quattro drive with a dynamic seven-speed S tronic. Gears can also be shifted via optional paddles on the steering wheel. When a driver selects efficiency mode in Audi drive select, the S tronic disengages a clutch while the sporty SUV is coasting and allows it to roll freely – which further enhances fuel efficiency.

Chassis
The sportiest player in this segment, the Audi Q3 has a chassis that combines outstanding safety with excellent comfort and is well-balanced and harmonious. Its four-link rear suspension handles longitudinal and lateral forces separately. The electromechanical power steering performs responsively, precisely and very efficiently; the electromechanical parking brake boosts convenience.

Audi drive select is available as an option for all Q3 engine types. It accesses the accelerator and steering. When ordered with the equipment options S tronic and adaptive light, these are influenced, too. The driver can vary the function of these systems between the comfort, auto, dynamic and efficiency modes. In efficiency mode, the air conditioner and cruise control operate with the specific aim of saving fuel.

The Audi Q3 leaves the factory with 16-inch lightweight alloy wheels fitted with 215/65 tires; the top-of-the-line engines are available with 17-inch wheels. Upon request, Audi can supply wheels between 17 and 19 inches, some of which are quattro GmbH products. All tires are distinguished by low rolling resistance; the brakes are strong and stable – and ventilated at the front. Thanks to its generous ground clearance of 17 centimeters (6.69 in), the Q3 can also tackle rough terrain.

In the Audi Q3, the electronic stabilization program (ESP) integrates an electronic differential lock, which – at the vehicle’s cornering limit – regulates the distribution of drive torques to the wheels via minor, barely perceptible braking. Regardless of version, the ESP offers trailer stabilization. Upon request, Audi will supply the Q3 with the hold assist function; at a later time, a hill hold assist system will maintain a constant vehicle speed while driving downhill.

Audi connect
Audi will provide a full range of infotainment technologies for the Q3. The connectivity package, for instance, includes the Audi music interface for integrating mobile playback devices and a GPS interface, which the customer can activate at once or at a later date.

Many additional solutions are taken straight from the luxury class. For example, the Bose surround sound system integrates 14 speakers, and the woofers up front illuminate handsomely when the interior darkens. The high-end infotainment cornerstone is the large MMI plus, a hard drive navigation system. Its manually extendable seven-inch color screen displays high-resolution 3D images; the system can also process whole-word voice input.

At a later date, it will become possible to link the MMI navigation plus system with the online Bluetooth car phone, which integrates a UMTS module. And thanks to Audi connect, the Internet will be on board the Q3 – including special services. A WLAN hotspot enables mobile terminal devices so that passengers can enjoy unrestricted Internet connectivity on the road.

With the online Bluetooth car phone, a route chosen by the driver can be portrayed on a Google Earth map. Audi’s online traffic information keeps drivers abreast of the traffic situation ahead. Information is up-to-the-minute and precise because data is generated from a great many vehicles.

Assistance systems
Assistance systems for the Q3 also come from higher-end model lines. Audi side assist employs radar to help drivers change lanes and Audi active lane assist helps drivers remain in their lane by slightly correcting steering, if necessary. The optional driver information system’s screen shows important road signs thanks to the camera-based speed limit display.

No less than five systems are ready to help drivers park. The park assist system does the steering for drivers while the vehicle is reversing into right-angle or parallel spaces; if necessary, it will execute several steering steps. Its twelve ultrasonic sensors detect obstacles such as concrete pillars, even if they are off to the vehicle’s side. The assistant’s software memorizes the obstacles’ locations and alerts the driver to them before the parking space is vacated.

The Audi Q3 – which will roll off the assembly line in Martorell, Spain near Barcelona – will go on sale in June. The basic price in Germany for the basic version will be 29,900 euros.

Stuttgart. The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class sets a new benchmark in the SUV world. Its low fuel consumption and emission figures are especially impressive. Across the range, fuel consumption is an average of 25 percent lower than for the previous model. Particularly noteworthy in this respect is the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, which has an NEDC consumption of just 6.0 l/100 km (158 g CO2/km) and can travel up to 1500 kilometres on a single tank of fuel. Yet for all this efficiency, the M-Class retains its fascination, in the way it uniquely combines agility with driving enjoyment and superior comfort. Further impressive features of the ML include 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, new developments to the chassis and innovative driving dynamics systems, all of which improve performance in both on-road and off-road situations. Its active and passive safety features are typical for the brand. A characteristic body design, together with a versatile interior that is highly conducive to its occupants’ wellbeing, enhance the driving experience in the new M-Class.

Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development, commented: “The M-Class embodies all the automotive experience that we have accumulated over 125 years and thus represents – in short – a quantum leap in terms of efficiency, safety, agility, driving enjoyment and design!”

Long-distance runner: high efficiency ensures extensive range

State-of-the-art engines, a clear policy of engine downsizing, a best-in-class Cd value of 0.32 and a comprehensive range of BlueEFFICIENCY measures all contribute to delivering superb energy efficiency. BlueTEC diesel engines and the new generation of BlueDIRECT petrol engines provide the basis for the excellent economic efficiency and outstanding environmental performance of the new M-Class. As far as the diesel models are concerned, now only available as BlueTEC units with SCR emissions technology, the focus is firmly on downsizing and on the new version of the V6 CDI engine.

In the ML 250 BlueTEC, the 3.0-litre V6 of the previous model is replaced by the thrifty four-cylinder EU6-standard unit already familiar from, for instance, the S-Class.

The ML 350 BlueTEC uses a completely reworked 3.0-litre V6 engine, which also more than meets the EU6 emissions standard and delivers far better performance, yet with considerably reduced fuel consumption. The efficiency improvements have been achieved, above all, through the use of the innovative TWAS (twin-wire-arc spraying) technology already used with great success since 2005 in AMG’s high-performance engines. The positive results here have led Mercedes-Benz to adapt this cylinder wall coating technology for use in the V6 diesel engine as well. The process reduces internal friction in the engine significantly. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 4.3 kg, as there is no longer any need for the grey cast iron cylinder liners that, until now, had to be pressed into the engine block. The benefits are striking: with these measures alone, fuel consumption could be reduced by around 3 percent.

Attention to detail: a fine finish adds efficiency

The excellent fuel economy is underpinned by a comprehensive package of BlueEFFICIENCY measures as well as by this state-of-the-art engineering. In addition to the ECO start/stop function that comes as standard, these measures include the new seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with a new fuel-economy converter, friction-optimised bearings and a transmission oil thermal management system. Low-friction axle drives, electric steering and tyres with low rolling resistance also play their part in reducing fuel consumption.

The optimised belt drive system with decoupler, together with on-demand control of all ancillary components and pumps, also helps to reduce the energy requirements of the new M-Class. The oil and water pumps in the engine, as well as the fuel pump in the rear section of the vehicle, are only activated according to actual need. The same control logic is used in the THERMATIC and THERMOTRONIC air conditioning systems. In these, the coolant compressor only runs when necessary. A key factor in the diesel engines is also the optimisation that has been undertaken of the flow and counterpressure in the exhaust system with its SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) emission control technology.

An intelligent use of lightweight construction techniques has enabled the development engineers to stop the steadily increasing weight spiral. The control arms of the front and rear axles, for example, as also the bonnet and wings, are made out of light and yet very strong aluminium alloys, while the cross member for the instrument panel is made of magnesium.

Detailed analysis: the “energy-transparent vehicle” makes things clear

The development tool “energy-transparent vehicle”, created in-house by Mercedes-Benz, was used for the first time as part of the M-Class development process. The pioneering opportunities presented by this method, which detects the possibilities for optimisation right down to even the most minute component, will be exploited on all new model series in the future. An exact and meticulous examination of the flow of energy throughout the vehicle (tank-to-wheel) helps the development engineers to optimise every single assembly that has an impact on fuel consumption, right down to individual wheel bearings.

Air flow optimisation: the most aerodynamically efficient SUV in its class

With a drag coefficient, or Cd value, of 0.32, the new M-Class (ML 250 BlueTEC) also sets a new best figure for this vehicle class (total aerodynamic drag Cd x A = 0.92 m2; predecessor 0.94 m2). Intensive simulations undertaken with the digital prototype, along with final touches added in the wind tunnel, ensure a perfect flow of air around the vehicle. The key factor determining the low wind resistance is the aerodynamic efficiency of the basic body shell, including the optimised design of the front bumper with its integrated spoiler, of the A-pillars and of the roof spoiler, plus numerous other detailed improvements. These include:

Sealing around the radiator section with adjustable fan shutter

Sealed joints between the bonnet and the headlamps

Front wheel spoilers

Air outlets in the front wheel well liners

Redesigned exterior mirror housings

Optimised roof spoiler

Side spoilers on the rear window (ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC)

Underfloor and engine compartment panelling

Aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels

The result: excellent comfort and driving dynamics

A high level of comfort, dynamic on-road handling and excellent off-road capability are part of even the standard equipment package on the new M-Class. For the first time, the steel suspension of the M-Class chassis now includes selective damping. During normal driving on only moderately uneven roads or during slow off-road driving, the system responds with a soft ride that enhances the occupants’ wellbeing as well as the car’s off-road capability. In order to maintain this sense of wellbeing during hard driving or abrupt evasive manoeuvres, the shock absorbers work even harder in such circumstances, so ensuring a high level of driving stability. The M-Class driver is supported here by an electric steering system that provides the optimum level of steering power assistance to suit the particular driving situation. Parking or manoeuvring off-road is made so much easier, thanks to the availability of maximum power assistance. The SUV also scores here with the tightest turning circle in its market segment. The 180-degree turn is negotiated within a circle diameter of just 11.8 metres. At higher speeds, the power assistance is reduced, to the benefit of the car’s handling.

For those who want to venture off surfaced roads, the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY models feature a comprehensive off-road programme as part of their standard equipment. This considerably improves the options once the going gets tough. It includes the permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC and the electronic traction control system ETS, as well as an off-road button that activates a special off-road transmission mode.

To improve traction, the slip thresholds and shift points of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS system have been raised

A flatter accelerator pedal curve improves the sensitivity with which the driver can accelerate

Off-road ABS ensures optimum braking on a loose surface

Start-off Assist and the HOLD function are further features helping the driver to pull away on a slope. Downhill Speed Regulation, or DSR, enables the M-Class to maintain automatically the speed set via the cruise control lever.

For those wishing to drive the M-Class more extensively away from surfaced roads, we recommend the optional ON&OFFROAD package.

Full programme: ON&OFFROAD package for all eventualities

The ON&OFFROAD package for the new M-Class uses a range of six transmission modes to optimise driving dynamics and handling safety, by ensuring that the necessary drive control is there to cope with the very different operating conditions encountered on and off-road. One automatic mode, two specifically off-road modes and three on-road modes are available.

The system is controlled via a rotary actuator on the centre console. The settings for AIRMATIC, and the drive line, are adapted to accommodate these specific requirements. The six transmission modes in detail:

Automatic – covers most everyday driving operations

Offroad 1 – light terrain, dirt roads and tracks

Offroad 2 – challenging off-road terrain with hilly stretches

Winter – for driving in wintry conditions on slippery roads, on snow, ice or with snow chains

Sport – more adventurous, dynamic driving on winding roads

Trailer – optimises moving off, manoeuvring and braking with a trailer

Despite so many options, for the driver the decision is always very clear: the setting is made intuitively, and the programme selected is shown in the multifunction display as well as in very realistic, almost photo-quality imagery on the screen of the COMAND system. Irrespective of which underlying programme is set, the gear reduction, lock, DSR or the self-levelling suspension of the AIRMATIC system can all be adjusted individually. As with the basic settings of the ON&OFFROAD package, it is practically impossible for the driver to make mistakes. Illogical settings, which might have a negative impact on handling, safety or traction, are ruled out. If there is any doubt, the system will revert to automatic mode.

In terms of “hardware”, the ON&OFFROAD package comprises an underride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres.

King of the curve: no roll or rocking here!

Active roll stabilisation in the form of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM can be combined as on option with AIRMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) as well as with the ON&OFFROAD package. This system uses active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles, which it controls automatically, irrespective of lateral acceleration, speed or the switch setting of the ADS Comfort/Sport switch. ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM compensates for the roll angle of the body through bends, so delivering significant improvement in both agility and driving pleasure. At the same time the system increases driving stability and thus safety, especially and importantly at high speeds. Improved ride comfort both on winding stretches of road and on the straight, together with enhanced options for off-road driving, are also among the benefits of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM.

Gently does it: attention to detail ensures comfort

The new M-Class promises relaxed and thus safe driving in all possible conditions. By paying close attention to detail every step of the way, the development engineers in the Mercedes Technology Center have significantly improved what they call the NVH comfort level (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). This is an important factor contributing to the general sense of wellbeing on board, whilst also playing its part in driver-fitness safety, especially on long journeys. The basis for the high level of NVH comfort is provided by the very rigid bodyshell of the M-Class. Further improvements have also been made to the drive system and chassis. This is all topped off by aero-acoustic refinements and the intelligent use of new-style insulation.

These measures at a glance:

Improved rigidity of the front end structure thanks to struts between the lines of the upper and lower longitudinal members

Increased comfort, yet also reduction in weight, thanks to hybrid construction of front module

Particularly robust cockpit cross member made in lightweight magnesium alloy

Intelligent use of acoustic insulation: In the production plants, insulation is fitted to the bodyshell where it is needed by computer-controlled robots. In the firewall area, the mass distribution of the insulation material used may vary in places in order to counteract potential noise penetration.

In line with the Mercedes-Benz brand philosophy, the new M-Class represents the embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz holistic safety concept of REAL LIFE SAFETY, which is derived primarily from what happens in a real accident situation. The extremely robust occupant compartment of the M-Class, together with the front and rear deformation zones, forms an effective basis for the occupant protection systems.

The front end structure, with its high energy-absorption potential, is essentially made up of the firewall and two lines of longitudinal members, anchored at the A-pillars. Two vertical members link the longitudinal members, so further increasing deformation resistance. The necessary rigidity and strength of the floor assembly is provided by a robust structure made up of a separate centre tunnel plus separate longitudinal members along each side, attached to the side wall. These are supported by cross members anchored to the floor as well as by a connecting member to the B-pillar as support for the front structure. The extremely robust side wall assembly comprises, quite apart from the longitudinal members described above and the side roof frame, A-pillars in a dual-casing design, internally reinforced with high-strength steel. In a side collision, the cross member beneath the cowl, the cross member between the longitudinal members underneath the pedal floor, the high-strength-steel cross member beneath the driver’s seat and the magnesium-alloy cross member underneath the instrument panel, as well as the front roof frame, ensure the highest possible stability of the occupant cell. The positioning of the fuel tank in front of the rear axle and of the filler neck over the rear axle increases the available deformation distance, so maximising the level of energy absorption in the event of a rear-end collision. This is achieved, above all, through the box-shaped design of the rear longitudinal members.

The complex restraint system can offer the highest possible protection. Up to nine airbags, which activate as they are needed, according to the type and severity of the accident, can reduce the stresses exerted on the occupants. The individual components in detail:

Two-stage adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger

Kneebag for the driver

Sidebags for driver and front passenger (combined thorax/pelvis bags)

Sidebags in the rear row of seats as an option

Windowbags across both rows of seats from the A to the C-pillar

3-point seat belts on all five seats

Pyrotechnic reel tensioners and permanent belt force limiters as well as electrically reversible belt tensioners in the front, reel tensioners and single-stage force limiters for the outer seats in the rear

ISOFIX child seat anchorage

Belt height adjustment for driver and front passenger

Belt status display for rear-seat passengers in the instrument cluster

Automatic child seat recognition (optional) with deactivation of the front passenger airbag if a special Mercedes-Benz child seat is used.

In a rear-end collision, a passive head restraint system developed specifically for this purpose can reduce the forces exerted on occupants.

Complementing the active safety systems such as the standard Brake Assist (BAS) or the optional BAS PLUS, which can prevent an accident or reduce its severity, the passive measures that contribute to pedestrian safety have also been further improved in the new M-Class. These include, for example, the installation of an Active Bonnet as standard.

Intelligent partner: protects its occupants as well as others

Both active safety and driver-fitness safety in the new M-Class are further improved by Assistance Systems that will already be familiar, primarily from the S- and E-Class. The standard equipment package includes the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, the anticipatory safety system PRE?SAFE® and a tyre pressure loss warning system, as well as adaptive brake lights and Brake Assist (BAS). The following Assistance Systems, some of them active, are available as additional equipment options:

Intelligent Light System, ILS, with specific lighting functions

Night View Assist Plus with automatic person recognition

Active Park Assist and the reversing camera enhance both safety and convenience.

Feature line: effortlessly superior, high-quality design

The vehicle body design for this new-generation model, with the very typical shape of its C-pillars, is full of character and immediately recognisable as an M-Class. Its styling, high-quality appeal and excellent ease of operation combine to give it a forceful presence. The front of the vehicle is dominated by the powerfully self-confident design of the radiator grille with its centrally positioned Mercedes star, giving it that typical M-Class look. The new styling of the headlamps conveys a high-quality, exclusive and innovative impression, especially when the Intelligent Light System (ILS) is taken as an optional extra. The LED daytime running lamps are set in chrome inserts integrated into the bumpers. A deeper, broad, chrome-effect underguard continues down from the lower edge of the radiator grille, so serving to reinforce the impressive overall appearance.

Seen from the side, the elongated lines give formal emphasis to the on-road credentials of this vehicle, whose compact proportions are defined by a large wheelbase and short overhangs. The C-pillar that is so characteristic of this model series takes its cue from early generations of the M-Class and differentiates it very clearly in stylistic terms from its competitors. At the same time, the way the roof line slopes down to the rear underlines the sporty appeal of the new M-Class. No pillar is visible in the transition from the rear side window through to the rear windscreen. This, together with the similarly wrap-around effect of the two-part rear light unit with LED fibre-optic technology, and the lowered roof with its large roof spoiler, add up to an overall harmonious design. The rear bumper, which features an integrated chrome-effect load sill guard in a new “wing design”, defines the characteristic appearance of the SUV’s rear end. The chrome-look finish of further product features, such as the roof rails, the beltline trim strip or the load compartment handle, emphasise the high-quality appeal of the exterior.

The available wheels range from a light and aerodynamically optimised 43.2 cm (17-inch) wheel through to 50.8 cm (20-inch) wheels with an elegant, high-quality appeal. As an option, 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG wheels can be fitted to emphasise the sporty look of the new M-Class.

Your wellbeing included: the interior of the new M-Class

A look at the interior design concept immediately demonstrates the way the authentic SUV experience is combined here with the sense of wellbeing inherent in a top-class Mercedes-Benz saloon. While the expressive design of the centre dome embodies the power of an SUV, the gentle downward curve of the instrument panel on the front passenger side gives a good sense of spaciousness, thus emphasising the vehicle’s long-distance credentials. The roomy and well-lit interior offers noticeably more elbow room than its predecessor (34 millimetres more in the front, 25 millimetres in the rear) and thus more space and comfort. An eye-catching feature of the instrument panel is a large decorative trim element that is then continued along the doors in a very harmonious wrap-around effect. These generously proportioned trim elements, in a three-dimensional design, are available in four high-quality wood finishes, or in aluminium. The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class can thus be appointed to reflect either exclusive refinement or sporty sophistication, according to the customer’s taste. The door openers and seat adjustment switches have been inset with precision craftsmanship into the side trim. The door centre panels feature distinctive decorative stitching, with a separate, exclusive look for the Sports package.

The state-of-the-art instrument cluster with its two clear and extremely legible round dials and a large, 11.4 cm display between them, impresses with the high-quality look of its design. Dominating the centre of the instrument panel in the centre of the vehicle is the large screen for the COMAND system. The control and display concept was developed specifically with user-friendly operation in mind. In the M-Class, Mercedes-Benz is introducing an advanced ergonomic concept that will find its way into all future new models. Just one element of this is the way the accessibility of the multi-function control lever on the steering column has been improved. All control levers can now be clearly seen. The cruise control lever has been moved to the lower position.

Infotainment, navigation and communication systems are intuitive and easy to operate using the metal Controller located on the centre console. Vertical rectangular air intake vents either side of the large screen serve to emphasise the more functional aspects of the SUV. The outer air vents are the same shape but in this case horizontally positioned, thus giving added design flair. The centre console incorporates an armrest with integrated handrest, in front of which is located the Controller and various switches, such as those for the off-road programmes.

The seats in the new M-Class are designed to provide a high level of comfort on long journeys as well as excellent lateral support. All important parameters can be electrically adjusted. These include the adjustment of seat height, backrest rake, seat cushion angle and reach. Generous seat adjustment travel of more than 350 millimetres lengthways and more than 90 millimetres in height ensure that M-Class drivers will always find the ideal seating position.

A high level of variability characterises the rear seats, which are fitted with an armrest and cupholder. The backrest angle adjustment on the rear seats is new, as is the through-loading feature above the armrest for the transport of skis. Folding both backrests as well as the seat cushions forward creates a level load compartment with a capacity of 2010 litres up to the roof liner.

Four colours are available for the interior appointments: black, almond beige, alpaca grey and tobacco brown/marron. These can be combined with a large range of materials: fabric/ARTICO man-made leather, ARTICO man-made leather and leather in six colour combinations. In conjunction with the Interior Sports package, the combination of DINAMICA microfibre and black ARTICO man-made leather, or nappa leather and black leather is also available.

For both eye and ear: good entertainment and the best information

The new M-Class comes as standard with the Audio 20 CD system, which comprises a radio with twin-tuner, TFT colour display with a 14.7 cm screen diagonal, an MP3/WMA/AAC-compatible CD player, a USB interface with CD Cover Art display (if saved on the storage medium), an AUX-IN socket in the centre armrest and a telephone keypad. The Bluetooth interface also allows hands-free telephony and Audio Streaming for the transfer of music.

The Audio 20 CD system can be optionally upgraded with the addition of a 6-disc CD changer, Media Interface, the “Logic7″ Surround Sound system from audio specialists harman/kardon®, digital radio (DAB) or comfort telephony in the armrest. Of particular interest is Becker® MAP PILOT, a fully integrated navigation module with 2D/3D map displays for Europe. This system, which is offered as a genuine accessory, can be docked into a cradle in the glove compartment and controlled through the central control unit of the Audio 20 CD system. The navigation route is shown in both the central display and the instrument cluster, while route recommendations are issued acoustically through the vehicle loudspeakers. Also included: automatic tailback avoidance (TMC Pro) and voice-controlled address entry. Updates to map data, functional software and other features are possible via the internet on a home computer, since the module is removable.

The COMAND Online system, with a 17.8 cm high-resolution TFT colour display, offers internet access in the M-Class for the first time. Customers can either surf freely while the vehicle is stationary, or call up a Mercedes-Benz app, the pages of which build particularly quickly and are easy to use even while the vehicle is on the move. The integrated apps include Google™ Local Search, access to Facebook (from 11/2011) and weather, as well as the ability to download and adopt into the navigation system a route that has been previously configured in Google Maps and sent to the car, or specific destinations. Further Mercedes-Benz apps will be successively introduced and will then be available for use by all customers. Telephones that are compatible with the COMAND Online apps are listed on the website www.mercedes-benz.com/connect. COMAND Online is available as an option with a 6-disc DVD changer. The system includes Speed Limit Assist as standard, which recognises traffic signs and displays the applicable speed limit in the instrument cluster.

Something for everyone: extensive model range and high level of specification

At market launch of the new M-Class, there are three models available: With fuel consumption according to NEDC of 6.0 l/100 km (158 g CO2/km), the extremely fuel-efficient ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC delivers an output of 150 kW (204 hp) along with 500 newton metres of torque. It can accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, while its top speed is 210 km/h. Inevitably somewhat faster on the move is the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, although with a fuel consumption that is almost as frugal, at 6.8 l/100 km. With a maximum output of 190 kW (258 hp) and ample torque of 620 Nm, the V6 diesel can accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 224 km/h. With 225 kW (306 hp), the petrol-engined ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY has an average consumption, according to NEDC, of just 8.5 l/100 km, with a top speed of 235 km/h.

They have already become something of a tradition and are highly valued by our customers: the limited-number Edition 1 vehicles that mark the beginning of any new model series. In the case of the new M-Class, the offer includes an AMG Exterior Sports package with a specific front apron, rear apron and side sill panels in vehicle colour, as well as 50.8 cm (9J x 20) high-sheen AMG light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design and 265/45 R 20 tyres. The sporty, dynamic look of the car is rounded off by sports brakes with perforated brake discs and special brake calliper covers, and metallic paintwork.

The interior is similarly impressive, featuring designo leather upholstery in either marron or porcelain with contrasting decorative stitching in a diamond-shaped pattern. The instrument panel, door centre panels, interior beltlines and centre console are also upholstered in leather. The wood/leather steering wheel in nappa leather with DIRECT SELECT shift paddles, wood trim in open-pore brown ash or high-gloss anthracite poplar and the black designo roof lining round off this luxurious package of appointments. The footwells have black velour floor mats with special metal ‘designo’ badges. Functional enhancements to the interior include a Memory package, seat heating for the driver’s and front passenger seats, sidebags in the rear and the automatic child seat recognition system, ACSR. The M-Class Edition 1 may be combined with any diesel or petrol engine.

Munich. At the proving ground it immediately left the competition standing and is also right up front when it comes to public popularity. During its first year, the new BMW 5 Seriesgot off to a perfect startand is continuing unabatedly with its success story in 2011. Commanding victories in comparison tests carried out by well-known specialised media, best marks in the analyses performed by independent experts with regard to design, safety and value stability as well as an unparalleled flood of accolades in the latest reader surveys at home and abroad characterise the impressive start-up phase, which began with the market launch of the BMW 5 Series Sedan in March 2010.

The outstanding desirability and popularity of the BMW 5 Series is also reflected in the sales figures. Demand was additionally boosted with the launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Since October 2010, the BMW 5 Series has been global market leader in the premium segment of the upper midrange class. During the course of 2010, a total of 211,968 vehicles of the BMW 5 Series were sold worldwide, this representing an increase of 22.6 percent over the previous year. In the spring of 2011, diversity of the BMW 5 Series model range will be extended yet again. Intelligent four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive can now be combined with three engine variants featured in the BMW 5 Series Sedan and it will shortly be introduced in the BMW 5 Series Touring. The new models BMW 535i xDrive, BMW 530d xDrive and BMW 530d xDrive Touring are fitted as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission including Auto Start Stop function.

The BMW 5 Series is “Germany’s Favourite Car”, has gained “Car of the Year” awards from the UK, Bulgaria, Mexico, Thailand and New Zealand, completed both the US NCAP and the Euro NCAP crash test as the safest vehicle in its class and received, among other awards, numerous prizes for design. No other model caused such a sensation on international automotive markets in 2010 as the new BMW 5 Series. On the basis of the car’s qualities and enormous popularity, market observers are already predicting that it will retain a high level of value stability, for which reason the new BMW 5 Series is listed as “Value Champion 2011” in the rankings published by the trade magazine “Auto Bild”.

Recently, the USA’s “2010 GOOD DESIGN Award” was added to the list of accolades. The jury consisting of international design experts presented the award for the authentic transfer of vehicle characteristics to the design of the BMW 5 Series Sedan. In the BMW brand’s homeland, the BMW 5 Series’ captivating aesthetics had already been honoured with the “red dot award”, the “iF Product Design Award” and the “Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany”. Furthermore, the BMW 5 Series Sedan received the ”Design Award” from the “Auto Bild” and the “Design Trophy” from the “Auto Zeitung” magazine.

In addition, the Slovak lifestyle magazine “Zivot” nominated the BMW 5 Series “Best looking car of the year”. With the “Golden Klaxon Award” and the title “Best Business Car”, the new BMW 5 Series was also able to win two significant accolades in Russia.

A multitude of further awards on different continents is proof of the BMW brand’s international reputation and the global popularity of the new BMW 5 Series.
The new BMW 5 Series was able to win a particularly large number of awards on the East Asian automotive markets. These include for example double victory at the “Car of the Year Award” and the “Automotive Quality Award” in Thailand, first place in the automobile ranking in the competition “Hit Products” of the “Herald Business Newspaper” in Korea and the “Autocar ASEAN Award” in Malaysia. In Indonesia, the BMW 5 Series was up front both at the “Auto Bild Indonesia Award” and the “Top Gear Indonesia Award”. In Singapore, the car won the award given by the newspaper “The Straits Times” in the class “Executive Sedan”. Furthermore, the online magazine “OneShift.com” voted the BMW 535i “Car of the Year”. A further “Car of the Year Award” was presented in Taiwan to the BMW 5 Series Sedan. In Hong Kong, the BMW 5 Series seized six significant awards at once. It was voted “Executive Sedan of the Year” by the magazine “Top Gear”, “Best Executive Sedan” by “Automobile Magazine” and “Best of European Executive Sedan” by “Car Plus Magazine”. In addition, the “JessiCar Award 2010”, the “COTY Gran Prize” and the title “Editor’s Choice – The Best of Executive Sedan 2010” went to the new BMW 5 Series.

The series of internationally most significant awards is completed by outstanding results in a multitude of discerning and renowned safety tests. The new BMW 5 Series completed the Euro NCAP, the US NCAP and the Australian NCAP crash tests with the best mark of 5 stars. In fact, the BMW 5 Series Sedan is the very first car to achieve a 100 percent rating in the category safety features in the Euro NCAP crash test. Moreover, it is one of the first vehicles to receive a special award given by Euro NCAP experts for the enhanced emergency call with automatic positioning and information on the severity of the accident.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also coped with the US NCAP crash test in a special way. It is the first car to receive at first go the highest rating of 5 stars in the further significantly tightened test procedure of the US-American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Furthermore, the new BMW 5 Series was honoured in the USA with another accolade for outstanding occupant protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) voted the car “Top Safety Pick” based on best ratings in all test categories.

The new BMW 5 Series was also successful in setting the benchmark for safety on the Australian and Asian automotive markets. In the Australasian NCAP crash test, the BMW 5 Series Sedan obtained the best result ever achieved in this vehicle class. In New Zealand as well, independent experts honoured the excellent level of occupant protection. At the “AA Motoring Excellence Awards”, the New Zealand automobile club AA (Automobile Association) nominated the new BMW 5 Series safest vehicle of the year.

December 16 2009

Four seasons, four personalities

Comfortable: AIRCAP® automatic draught-stop plus AIRSCARF®
Quiet: acoustic soft top as standard
Safe: robust roll-over protection and new headbags
The highly appealing and emotionally charged Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, which goes on sale on 11 January 2010, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling. Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition – with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette.

In keeping with the motto “four seasons, four personalities”, all-year-round suitability was right at the top of the developers’ list of priorities. With the new E-Class Cabriolet, the cabriolet season lasts the whole year because, while many cabriolets tend to disappear from the roads of Western Europe in the autumn, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet (length/breadth/height: 4698/1786/1402 mm) provides driving pleasure and comfort whether the roof is open or closed.

New features include:

The AIRCAP® automatic draught-stop: always on board and easily controllable at the push of a button, it reduces turbulence substantially for all four seat occupants
The modified AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system
The acoustic soft top fitted as standard
The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds – even when driving at speeds of up to 40 km/h. The cabriolet roof is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the boot area; it must be closed in order to close the soft top. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the boot capacity is increased by 90 litres to 390 litres. A through-loading feature isincluded as standard for the new Cabriolet, as is EASY-ENTRY – a manually operated entry and exit aid for the rear passengers.

The powerplants for the new E-Class Cabriolet are equally innovative: the new direct-injection diesel and petrol models combine efficiency with effortlessly superior power delivery. The exemplary, low fuel consumption has not only been achieved because of the new engines, but also with a number of practical measures. These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tyres with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle’s electrical power requirements, plus the crucial factor of outstanding aerodynamics. The Cabriolet’s cd figure of 0.28 is the best in its class, marking a continuation of the E-Class success story in the field of aerodynamics.

An overview of the engines:

E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 125 kW (170 hp)
E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 150 kW (204 hp)
E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 170 kW (231 hp)
E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 135 kW (184 hp)
E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 150 kW (204 hp)
E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 215 kW (292 hp)
E 500 Cabriolet: 285 kW (388 hp)
Less turbulence, easier to use: AIRCAP® is a world-first

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced a world premiere in the shape of a draught-stop for the SL model series, followed in 2004 by the AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system to further enhance comfort in open-top models. Now comes another world-first: the AIRCAP® automatic draught-stop, which can be activated at the push of a button, greatly reduces turbulence in the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, creating a sea of warm air. It is also much easier to implement and use than conventional draught-stops: there is no tricky installation, the two individual rear seats remain free and the Cabriolet’s flowing side lines remain uninterrupted. AIRCAP® is therefore a classic Mercedes innovation: functional, comfort-enhancing, elegant and safe.

AIRCAP® consists of two components: a wind deflector that can be extended by around six centimetres with a net in the windscreen frame and a draught-stop between the rear seats.

The functions of the two components:

Elevation of the free flow above the interior
Net at the front increases the basic pressure in the interior
Draught-stop at the rear reduces the backflow
As well as enhancing occupant comfort and wellbeing, the reduction in draught when AIRCAP® is activated (it can be activated at speeds of up to 160 km/h and remains in use right up to the car’s top speed) reduces the interior noise level – so passengers in all seats find it far easier to communicate.

The Cabriolet Comfort package includes AIRCAP® with AIRSCARF®. This patented system functions like an invisible scarf, which warms the occupants’ head and neck areas. AIRSCARF® is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

The Mercedes engineers have modified this unique innovation specifically for the E-Class Cabriolet: in this model, an adjustment wheel pivots the outlet nozzle upwards and downwards by a total of 36 degrees over and above the head restraint height adjustment, meaning that the driver and front passenger can enjoy the unique neck-level heating regardless of how short or tall they are.

Quiet, warm and windproof: acoustic soft top fitted as standard

Thanks to its acoustic soft top, fitted as standard, even the closed E-Class Cabriolet has one of the quietest interiors in the segment for four-seater premium cabriolets with a fabric roof. The soft top’s exceptionally high-quality insulation brings about a clearly noticeable reduction in the interior noise level compared to conventional fabric soft tops. Exterior noise caused by other vehicles and wind noise are therefore absorbed more effectively. On the road, the difference is audible from speeds of just 80 km/h, for example when driving through a tunnel or overtaking a convoy of trucks. At higher speeds, the benefits of the acoustic soft top are even more tangible. For instance, it is possible to have a perfectly normal phone conversation in hands-free mode even when travelling at a speed of over 200 km/h.

The soft top is of course waterproof and windproof. Plus it can be put through an automatic carwash without any hesitation. With a total thickness of 23.5 mm, the fabric soft top offers excellent thermal insulation, meaning that the E-Class Cabriolet is also ideal for use in winter.

Safety: robust structure, anticipatory protection and windowbags

The new Cabriolet offers the wealth of safety innovations one would expect from a Mercedes model. Highlights of the open-top two-door model include roll-over protection, the A-pillars reinforced by two additional tubes and the plug-in B-pillars. This new model is also the first Mercedes cabriolet to feature headbags.

The roll-over protection consists of two robust bars, each with a diameter of 35 mm, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests. A tilting cone sensor detects imminent danger to the occupants based on extreme skidding movements or acceleration caused by impact. If this sensor then sends a corresponding signal, pre-tensioned pressure springs are activated by pyrotechnic means, i.e. extremely quickly.

Consequently, both roll-over bars in the rear head restraints are extended. They reach their highest point and are locked automatically within a fraction of a second. In combination with the robust A-pillars, each of which is reinforced with two high-strength steel tubes, the steel bars provide highly effective roll-over protection.

The plug-in B-pillars are extremely robustly connected as they engage in the side skirts, thus offering highly effective protection in the event of a crash. A shoe made from ultra-high-strength steel braces the inside of the B-pillar against the rear seat crossmember.

With seven airbags fitted as standard, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats, not to mention crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger, the new E-Class Cabriolet offers the most extensive safety equipment package in this vehicle category. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front airbags and sidebags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver’s side, and headbags. The latter, which appear in a Mercedes cabriolet for the first time, are housed in the door panelling in the beltline area. Covering a wide area – around 0.7 x 0.5 metres with a volume of 17 litres when deployed – the airbags provide extremely effective protection for occupants large and small in the event of a crash. The three-part side protection system – comprising headbag and thoraxbag – optimises the level of protection afforded to individual parts of the body. Rear sidebags are available as an option.

Further exemplary safety equipment available for the E-Class Cabriolet includes ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection, PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection, the sophisticated Intelligent Light System, the Active Bonnet and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control.

The E-Class range: four attractive models

An innovative family at the heart of the brand

Complete: the Cabriolet is the fourth model in the E-Class range
Innovative: all variants are characterised by ground-breaking new products and features
Successful: the E-Class is the clear leader in its market segment
In March 2009 Mercedes-Benz embarked on the renewal of the E-Class model family – one year later, with the market launch of the Cabriolet, the portfolio will be complete. A number of technical innovations have been incorporated into the new E-Class which no other car in this class is able to offer – from drowsiness detection to automatic emergency braking when an accident is recognised as imminent, and from Adaptive Highbeam Assist to the active bonnet. The E-Class is one the safest vehicles in its segment, a fact which has also been proven by independent crash tests and the specialist press.

In addition, there is a wide selection of powerful and efficient engines which is set to be systematically extended over the coming months. Depending on model, these range from the innovative E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY producing 100 kW (136 hp) up to the E 500 producing 285 kW (388 hp). There are also AMG versions producing 386 kW (525 hp) and the all-wheel drive system 4MATIC. Exemplary aerodynamics are yet another feature of the model range: with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25, the saloon is the most aerodynamically efficient four-door car in the world, while the model range’s Coupé achieves the best overall figure for a series-production car with a Cd figure of just 0.24.

“The renewal of the E-Class model family at the heart of the Mercedes brand has come at precisely the right time. The success of the new E-Class shows that even in what are now economically turbulent times, Mercedes brand values such as safety and efficiency, combined with exciting design, enjoy particular significance among discerning customers”, explains Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

As such the E-Class is the clear leader in its market segment: in Germany the E-Class Saloon enjoys a market share of around 60 percent in its respective segment, while in Western Europe (excluding Germany) its share is more than 40 percent.

The four models in the current Mercedes luxury class series:

The E-Class Saloon: the benchmark in the luxury class.
Market launch: March 2009
The E-Class Coupé: excitement can be this efficient.
Market launch: May 2009
The E-Class Estate: intelligent (E)state-of-the-art.
Market launch: November 2009 and
The E-Class Cabriolet: the 4-seater for all 4 seasons.
Market launch: March 2010
Besides the innovations which all of the models of this family share, the individual variants have a number of new products and features to enhance the comfort, safety and appeal which are specific to this model. With the new AIRCAP® feature, enhanced AIRSCARF® and also the standard acoustic soft top, the new E-Class Cabriolet for example provides all-year-round comfort which is unique in the segment of open-top vehicles. “The development of AIRCAP® is an example of the perseverance and tenacity of our engineers and technicians: convinced of the customer benefit of an automatic draught-stop, our specialists have finally found the Mercedes solution, which at the press of a button helps to significantly reduce turbulence in the car’s interior for all passengers – it is easy to use and always there. In this way we are enabling our customers to enjoy comfortable, open-top driving all year round”, says Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler Board Member for Corporate Research and Head of Development of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

For its part, in addition to air suspension with self-levelling at the rear as standard, the Estate model also provides unique new load compartment management features.

“Never before have we had such an effective presence with our E-Class model series as we have with today’s range. Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet all share the same winning gene, yet appeal to our customers in a very individual way. This mixture has been extremely well received by our customers. With the new Cabriolet we are complementing our successful E-Class family with yet another particularly emotionally appealing model, in which our customers can continue to enjoy the Cabriolet season even longer thanks to the unique automatic draught-stop”, confirms Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

As a study of what the future may hold, MINI is set to unveil a radical open body four seater inspired by the infamous Mini Moke.

Based closely on the brand’s fourth model planned for international release in late 2010, the MINI Beachcomber Concept will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show (16–24 January 2010) in Detroit.

Utilising the drivetrain and design elements of MINI’s pending compact SUV, MINI is now demonstrating its potential for further enhancement and diversity through another spectacular concept car.

“It’s an exciting look at what the future could hold for MINI. If the MINI Beachcomber Concept did eventuate I think it would be very well suited to the Australian landscape and way of life, especially given our propensity for coastal living and appetite for adventure, leisure and fun,” said MINI manager, Justin Hocevar.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept is ideal for a spontaneous and active experience offered by the car’s modern drivetrain technology and space concept to ensure a highly emotional driving experience, whether it’s cruising through town, enjoying rough tracks in the mountains, or breezing along the beach.

The driver and passengers can also enjoy the driving pleasure of the MINI Beachcomber Concept in everyday traffic retaining its unmistakable character even inadverse weather conditions. The concept vehicle is complete with a soft roof as well as lightweight door and roof elements that can be fitted easily and conveniently within moments, reflecting the vast flexibility of the vehicle.

Through its robust and versatile character, the MINI Beachcomber Concept follows in the footsteps of the Mini Moke, which, back in the 1960s, quickly became the epitome of adventurous motoring to suit an array of leisure and sports activities in sunny coastal regions.

Measuring approximately four metres in length the MINI Beachcomber Concept offers supreme variability and spaciousness for active leisure as well as a high level of safety through its robust structure and to guarantee maximum occupant safety at all times.

Thanks to its clear design language, the body of the MINI Beachcomber Concept with short overhangs and distinct front and rear styling, leaves no doubts that this is a genuine MINI.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept offers an outlook at an incomparable driving experience in new, unprecedented style reflecting the needs and wishes of a modern, lifestyle-oriented target group and the authentic character of the brand.

Once again MINI has pushed the boundaries and enters new dimensions of driving pleasure by expanding the model range and previewing unconventional creative design.

BMW has brought the performance character of its famous BMW M division to bear on the segment of X models for the very first time.

The BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M models set new standards in their class in terms of dynamic performance as a result of supreme acceleration, lateral dynamics, steering behaviour, short stopping distances and efficiency – all hallmarks of BMW M vehicles.

“Now with the arrival of the X6 M and X5 M, we’re able to offer an M version which will tempt performance-oriented buyers considering an ML 63 AMG or Cayenne Turbo with benefits such as faster acceleration, less weight and better fuel consumption,” says Stavros Yallouridis, the Australian head of BMW Group Australia.

First Australian deliveries of the BMW X6 M will commence in December this year; whilst the BMW X5 M will charge onto the market in January 2010.

“We are particularly pleased to welcome a new chapter of BMW M to the Australian market give we have such a loyal and strong following of the M product range,” says Yallouridis.

The BMW X6 M is powered by a new 4.4-litre V8 high-performance engine.

Delivering peak power of 408 kW, the new M TwinPower Turbo engine is the world’s first power unit with a common exhaust emission manifold joining both rows of cylinders as well as Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology.

The turbocharger and the catalytic converters are positioned in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders ensuring spontaneous and direct response so typical of BMW M as well as a linear surge of power for a consistent flow of torque at all times. Peak torque is rated at 680 Newton-metres available across an extremely wide range of engine speeds from 1,500 to 5,650rpm.

The BMW X6 M accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a scintillating 4.7 seconds and has a governed top speed of 250 km/h. Characterised by massive front air intakes adoring the front apron as well as the rear apron with diffuser and quad chrome exhausts the range topping X6 provides a clear indication if its awesome engine power.

Despite superlative driving dynamics, the BMW X6 M offers the highest level of efficiency in its segment thanks to the High Precision Injection engine combined with proven and newly developed BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. These include Brake Energy Regeneration as well as on-demand control of the electrical fuel pump, detachable a/c compressor and volume flow-controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the anti-roll system.

The BMW X6 M complies with the EU5 and LEV II emission standards and average fuel consumption is 14.3 litres per 100 kilometres, making it the most fuel efficient in its class.

A six-speed M Sports Automatic transmission, featuring optimised gearshift dynamics and outstanding gearshift comfort is fitted to the BMW X6 M. Extremely short gearshift times are the result of an innovative torque reduction concept which briefly cancels out fuel injection and ignition.

Drivers can shift gears by the BMW M aluminium shift paddles on the steering wheel or via the electronic gear selector and a launch control function is available for maximum acceleration.

The BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M are the first all-wheel-drive models built by BMW M GmbH, combining BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control. Both models exhibit outstanding driving dynamics combined with supreme stability and excellent traction as well as agility unparallel in this segment.

The X6 M features specifically developed M Servotronic steering which provides substantial steering support at low speeds and exact feedback at higher speeds for greater precision when travelling fast. The driver can also call up the Sports Mode via the M Drive button for an uncompromisingly sporting control map.

Adaptive Drive with electronically adjustable dampers (EDC) and Dynamic Drive are fitted as standard with self-levelling air suspension on the rear axle. The M specific design of the suspension lowers the vehicle by 10 millimetres compared with the non-M X5 and X6 models and features stiffer shock absorbers and modified swaybars. The result is that body roll and movements are reduced, while self-steering and alternating load alteration effects are optimised. The highly sports-oriented design empowers drivers to take individual control in many different ways. The EDC and M Drive buttons allow the driver to call up damper tuning and the M Servotronic steering control map in Normal or Sport mode.

The high-performance brake system features lightweight technology offering superior stopping power with virtually no fading and optimum control of the brakes.

The BMW X6 M also features M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which raises the control thresholds for intervention by the brakes and the reduction of the engine power and provides that typical steering behaviour so characteristic of BMW M by shifting the drive power to the rear in the xDrive setting and interacting appropriately with Dynamic Performance Control. MDM allows maximum speeds in bends plus unrestricted safety when driving to the extreme.

The X6 M is the first M model to receive run-flat safety tyres as standard equipment, with the addition of an emergency spare also fitted as standard. The X6 M arrives with 20-inch light-alloy wheels equipped with 275/40 R20 runflat safety tyres at the front and road-hugging 315/35 R20 runflat safety tyres at the rear.

Further standard equipment highlights include Bi-xenon dual headlights including a daytime driving light function, adaptive brake light, Alarm System, Glass Sunroof, Metallic paint, Individual High-gloss shadowline and Quad chrome exhausts on this exclusive model.

A host of innovative driver assistance systems include Head-Up Display, Adaptive Headlights, High Beam Assistant and Comfort Access.

Inside, the BMW X6 M comes with M heated seats, an M leather steering wheel, entry strips with M designation and an M footrest, as well as the M-specific cockpit including an instrument cluster with a variable pre-warning field in the rev counter, specific vehicle function displays, and white illumination of the display units.

The colour pallet for the X6 M is again in keeping with M models, offering the choice of solid colours that include Alpine White and Melbourne Red as well as metallic paint options of Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Silverstone, Space Grey and Monte Carlo Blue.

In contrast the interior is equipped with extended BMW Merino Leather in Black, Sliverstone or Bamboo Beige that extends beyond the front and rear seats, to the centre console, door trims and armrest together with an embossed M symbol in the front headrests.

“What more could you ask for? Here you have a car with coupe design, power, agility and performance, street credibility and uniqueness, plus it offers the versatility of a sports activity vehicle,” says Yallouridis.

The X6 M is priced from $179,900* and X5 M priced from $172,900*
